THE ISLAND OF BRAC (CROATIA)

THE ISLAND...
|
Brac is like a huge ship that anchors in the most beautiful part among the central Dalmatian islands. It is the story of about twenty picturesque settlements with characteristic features of Mediterranean little towns. It is filled with a harmony between nature and people. All its visitors have left behind their marks and traces of enchantment with the people, the stone, the sun, the sea and the sweat that gave birth and life to this splendour, this miracle of labour. This labour has made this island what it is.

The towns of the island bathe in the sun, squeezed in between the blue sky and azzure sea. The stone town's beauty is reflected in the sea. The elegant belfries in the town centres on the elevated places stand erect like masts on the decks of ships forever at anchor. The poetic sounds are heard from the belfries like trumpets saluting centuries and civilizations vanished in the storm of history. The Brac settlements are loaded with valuable stone buildings. They vary from modest abodes to the vast period churches, showing both, the monumentality and intimacy of the space.

THE SEA ...
|
The earliest occupation of the Bracans was hunting. It was only in modern Brac that people descended to the sea, taking to fishing. Today, however, it is really very rare to see the fishing nets drying. All the different kinds on nets have become etnographical items on display in the fishermen cellars, where it is rare to see fishermen gathering. In the past, at night, on the blue fields in the marked fishing places, one could see blinkering of the squeezed shoals of sprats quivering under the lamp light or that the light from the burning pine.
